Integration: building bridges through language

Introduction

This short animated video created with Vyond addresses the impact of language barriers on school–family communication.
The scenario highlights a common challenge faced by immigrant families: when parents, often mothers, cannot speak the host country’s language, dialogue with schools breaks down.

The animation uses storytelling and metaphor to raise awareness on how language learning empowers parents, strengthens trust, and fosters children’s integration into both school and society.

Instructional design approach (Merrill’s Principles for Digital Resources)

  • 1. Problem-centered

    The video opens with a realistic situation: a teacher trying to engage with parents while communication falters. This presents a clear, authentic problem .

  • 2. Activation

    The scenario connects to viewers’ prior knowledge or experiences, either as parents, educators, or community members. It invites them to recall how communication gaps affect relationships and belonging.

  • 3. Demonstration
